Kitchen Blinds That Handle Steam, Sun and Splash
Kitchens are harder on a window covering than any other room in the house. Here's what actually matters when you choose.
Constant steam from cooking, grease in the air, water around the sink, and often the hardest afternoon sun in the house. It's the room where fabric curtains struggle most and where the material you choose matters more than the style. Our zebra blinds use a water-resistant polyester blend that wipes clean rather than absorbing kitchen moisture.
Why a Blind Beats a Curtain in a Kitchen
Fabric curtains absorb cooking steam and dry slowly, particularly in winter with the window shut. Over time they hold odour and can spot with mould. Washing one means taking it down, laundering and rehanging, which most people do roughly never.
A water-resistant blind wipes down in seconds and dries on the window.
Being straight with you though: no window covering fixes a damp kitchen. Ventilation does. Run your extractor while cooking and for ten minutes afterwards. What a blind does is not make the problem worse the way a wet curtain will.
Best Blind Types for Kitchen Windows
Your choice depends on which way the window faces and what you need from it during the day.
The right answer for most kitchens. The alternating sheer and solid stripes let you filter light while keeping some view out. From outside, people can't see in clearly, but you still get natural working light over the bench. A kitchen you can see out of while you cook is a nicer kitchen.
Choose these if your kitchen takes hard west sun and gets uncomfortable in summer, or if the window is closely overlooked. Blockout is a heavier, denser weave that stops light through the fabric itself.
You still keep the day-night function. The striped layers slide against each other, so you can run it as a filtering blind through the day and close it fully when the afternoon sun arrives.
Worth considering for a window you can't easily reach, which in a kitchen usually means one behind the sink or above a bench run. Battery motor, so there's no wiring and no power point needed. Remotes and the smart hub are ordered separately from the motor.
Decide before you order. Motorisation can't be retrofitted to a manual blind afterwards.
The material matters more than the style. In a kitchen, water resistance does more for you than any other single feature.
The Fabric, and What It Does
Water-resistant polyester blend. Synthetic, not cotton or linen. Steam doesn't soak into it the way it does a woven curtain, so it doesn't hold moisture or odour. It may feel faintly damp after heavy cooking and it dries on the window within hours.
Two layers, not one. A zebra blind isn't a single sheet. It's one continuous loop of fabric running down the front, around the bottom rail and back up the rear. When it's down you have two fabric layers with a pocket of air between them, which does more against heat and cold than a single-layer roller blind.
What water-resistant does not mean. It isn't waterproof and it isn't sealed. It means the fabric won't deteriorate under normal kitchen moisture. Standing water on the fabric is still standing water, so mount clear of the sink.
On fading. Any fabric exposed to years of direct sun will change eventually, and we're not going to tell you otherwise. If your kitchen window takes brutal all-day sun, a lighter colour will show change less than a dark one. Your blind carries a 24 month warranty on parts and fabric.
Keeping Kitchen Blinds Clean
This is genuinely minimal, and it's the main reason people move away from venetians.
Regular wipe. Every week or two depending on how much you cook, run a soft dry cloth down the fabric. Grease particles settle on every surface in a kitchen, and removing them before they build up is the whole job. It takes a couple of minutes per window.
Spot cleaning. Wipe spatters while they're fresh rather than letting them dry. For dried-on grease, use a barely soapy damp cloth and gentle pressure, then a clean damp cloth, then let it air dry. No harsh chemicals and no scrubbing.
Deep clean. Once or twice a year, wipe down top to bottom so any moisture runs downward rather than sideways into the mechanism. Let it dry fully before rolling it up.

Measuring and Mounting a Kitchen Window
The one thing to get right: send us the actual window measurement, not an adjusted one.
We deduct 5mm from the width ourselves at manufacture on inside mounts. If you deduct as well, your blind arrives 10mm narrow with a light gap down the side. Give us the real opening and we'll handle the rest.

Over the sink. Mount the brackets as high as the frame allows, so the bottom rail sits clear of direct splash. You also want to reach the chain without leaning into the sink.
Near the stove. Keep the blind well clear of the hob. Direct heat and a fabric blind aren't a good combination, and an extractor running while you cook helps here too.
Window handles. Kitchen windows get opened constantly. An inside-mount blind hangs in front of the handle, so check it won't foul.
Inside or outside mount. An inside mount needs at least 50mm of reveal depth for the bracket, or 80mm for the casing to sit flush. Kitchen reveals are often shallow or tiled, so measure the depth first. Our metal bracket fits either way, so you have options on the day.
Chain side. Keep it off the bench side and away from where you stand to cook.
Chain safety. Your blind comes with a chain safety clip that screws to the wall so the chain runs taut and can't form a loop. Fit it. It takes a minute, and Product Safety New Zealand recommends fitting one with every corded window covering, even in homes with no young children.
Most people have a blind up in around ten minutes.
